Grossmont College is ranked nationally as one of the top 100 associate degree granting institutions and is consistently first in transfer to San Diego State University. Also voted "San Diego's Best" in two recent years among a poll of readers of a major regional newspaper. Offering over 150 associate degree and certificate programs, Grossmont College's approach to the delivery of education and support services is based upon innovation, careful planning, and effective strategies and practices to meet a broad array of student goals and special needs. The College is a leader in the use of technology for both instructional and student services purposes, and operates numerous learning assistance centers to meet general or discipline-specific needs.

Among the many creative and responsive programs and services that make Grossmont College a noteworthy educational institution are: Project Success, a nationally recognized learning community program; Health Professions programs vital to regional community health care providers, including alternative approaches to nursing education; Grossmont Middle College High School that has received national acclaim; a comprehensive program in the creative and performing arts; sixteen intercollegiate athletic teams that consistently win conference and state championships; and publications and promotional materials that have recently earned approximately 50 regional and international awards. The district's $202 million facilities bond measure, which paved the way for Grossmont College to renovate or replace aging, overcrowded facilities, build new high-tech structures to meet student needs and improve infrastructure and circulation, including the college's new entrance road. The Learning and Technology Resource Center opened in 2004. The Science Laboratory Building and the Digital Arts and Sculpture Building Complex opened in 2007. The refurbished Exercise Science and Wellness Complex opened in 2008, and a new multi-story parking structure opened in Summer 2009. The new Health and Sciences Complex opened for classes in Fall 2010. Griffin Center, the college’s new student center, and the Student and Administrative Services Building opened in Spring 2012.

Enrollment has remained steady at a level above 16,000 since the mid-1970s, rising to 17,484 students in 1991 and 18,241 students in 2002. In Fall 2009, enrollment exceeded 20,000 for the first time (20,362), increasing to the highest level ever in Spring 2010, at 20,793 students.
